The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
